Pinhoti Trail
|
The Pinhoti (Pin-ho-tee) was designated as a National Recreation Trail in 1977. The name is derived from the Creek Indian words "pinwa" meaning turkey and "huti" meaning home; i.e. turkey home. The trail is a continuous, marked footpath extending over 100 miles from Porter's Gap of Talladega Mountain near Talladega, Al. to north of US Highway 278 near Piedmont, Al., along the southern most crest of the Appalachian Mountains. The Trail traverses mostly public land in the Talladega and Shoal Creek Districts of the Talladega National Forest of Alabama, Cheaha Wilderness and Cheaha State Park. The highest elevation along the trail is Cheaha Mountain (2,400 ft).
